The difficulties notwithstanding, the literary movement grew stronger in the 19th century. Book production in this century exceeded that of the three previous centuries put together. Each of the three previous centuries had been identified with a specific writer (16th century-Etxepare, 17th-Axular, 18th-Larramendi), whereas the 19th century does not refer to individual writers but to groups of writers.
