A brief history of Basque literature19th century

Basque literature saw a revival in the Northern Basque Country in the 1870s and 1880s. Poetry circles were held with the help of money donated by Antoine D’Abbadie, and L. L. Bonaparte promoted the analysis and cultivation of the Basque language. Hiribarren’s poetry anthology Eskualdunak and Daskonaguerre’s novel Atehka gaitzeko oihartzunak belong to that era, as do the prose writers Arbelbide, Lapeyre, Lapitz and Joannategi and the poets Elizanburu and Adema. Eskualduna, the first weekly journal in Basque, also dates back to that time. In the words of Villasante, this was the “golden age” in the literature of the Northern Basque Country.
