The type of poetry that emerged in the 19th century was not to undergo any significant change during the early years of the new century. The type of poetry that predominated in the Poetry Festivals continued to exert a considerable influence.

In the 20th century many writers stood out in the different Basque genres, but perhaps the biggest change took place in the poetry genre.

In this branch of Basque literature one can soon come across three great poets: N. Ormaetxea aka “Orixe”, E. Urkiaga aka “Lauaxeta” and J. M. Agirre aka “Lizardi”.
