The biggest work of cultural expansion took place thanks to these associations and publications. The Euskal Esnalea, for example, organised numerous meetings on the Basque language. The Eusko Ikaskuntza or Euskal Ikasketen Elkartea (Basque Studies Association) oversaw the proper organising of studies and events around Basque culture. The Euskaltzaindia or Academy of the Basque Language was also created around these associations with the aim of analysing the Basque language and working on it. On another level the Euskaltzaleak group was founded around 1926-27. Thanks to the journal Yakintza and the unrivalled work of Jose Ariztimuño aka “Aitzol”, an attempt was made to instil Basque culture in the people and bring it closer to them.
